A farm of hope

The Maasai will be forced to adopt alternative, smaller-scale agricultural practices in response to this dramatic change.

We have spent the past 6 weeks sharing opportunities for you to be a part of global transformation, through various opportunities presented in 2014 giving catalog. The following story is one we have shared a few times this year.

Maasai tribal land is being sub-divided into private property for the first time in history, bringing centuries of nomadic pastoralism as a sustainable livelihood to a close. The Maasai will be forced to adopt alternative, smaller-scale agricultural practices in response to this dramatic change. In June, we wrote about the vision AfricaHope has in response to this change:

“In 2013, AfricaHope purchased 48 acres of undeveloped land in its ministry area in southern Kenya. The vision for this land is two-fold, to develop a sustainable, local source of funding for AfricaHope's ministry among the Maasai, and to educate the surrounding community in alternative agricultural practices. AfricaHope is working to develop the farm in the heart of Maasai-land in order to prove that alternative agricultural practices are not only possible in Maasai-land, but are also profitable. The AfricaHope farm will be a profitable, working farm, demonstrating various alternative agricultural practices such as egg production from chickens, raising chickens for meat, bee-keeping for honey production, advancements in home-gardening techniques that use minimal amounts of water, beans and corn, composting practices etc. This will be a place for the surrounding communities to visit, learn, and be able to replicate in their own homes and farms.”

When we last wrote, they were preparing to put in a borehole, to provide a permanent source of water. Now, we have water! The farm is fenced and a first crop of onions is in the ground. The next step is a need for drip kits, which distribute water evenly and conserve water. We are excited to see the potential for change on this farm that can transform the lives of Maasai people and how their land is used. Please pray for success and that God will continue to provide as this farm grows.
