A Vibrant City

Team Czech Republic

Written by Abby - Serving in the Czech Republic

Prague is a city containing a vibrant yet somber history. I’ve never had my heart simultaneously broken, yet wanting to encourage and love on people in such a unique way as I have the Czech people. They value deep relationships with people and conversations about topics such as philosophy and theology. Many people are also curious about exploring different religions, as Laurie, one of our host missionaries, explained to us. I saw this played out in action when I went out with Evangelism Explosion to observe them evangelizing to people on the street. This ministry is currently doing a class on how to evangelize to people at the library, which is how Laurie Barnes, one of our missionaries, introduced us to them. After the class, they go out and evangelize to people on the street to practice. This is the part that I joined them on.

One such conversation stuck out to me because it was a young lady studying at a religious/theological university here in Prague. She wants to be a social worker once she is finished. While she stated that it was not possible for her to be a Christian because of how it would affect her, she was very open to dialoguing with the individuals with Evangelism Explosion. One of them even shared their testimony with her and her friend that later came along, and it was a beautiful story of redemption. I had been under the impression that Czech people did not really enjoy speaking with strangers, but this demonstrated a curiosity that Laurie had only discussed coming out in full. This young lady attends a school that preaches about Christ but does not believe. Something keeps her there and I pray that she will pursue her curiosity about the faith more deeply and establish a relationship with the Lord.

On this same outing, we met a young gentleman who professed to be a Christian. He spoke a little bit of English and he eventually expressed that he would be interested in coming to where I attend church. The Lord was definitely moving in that situation, and it was wonderful to see Him opening doors through this simple conversation. This curiosity and enthusiasm for discussing religion appeared again in an entirely different and beautiful context. I pray that the Lord will work through him attending church to help him grow his faith, even if all I do is introduce him to it.
