A Glimpse into 10 Months in Thailand

Team Thailand

Written by Sami - Serving in Thailand

Two years ago, when I visited Thailand for the first time through a Joni and Friends internship, I found so many things I enjoyed—with the country and the ministry. I knew then that I had to come back. After two years, I had the incredible opportunity to return, this time for ten months, serving with New International as an intern at the RICD Wheelchair Project. I could never have imagined all that this year would hold. I lived with amazing people who became dear friends, worked in a ministry that stretched and grew me, and went on countless adventures throughout Thailand. Every bit of it felt like an answer to prayer.

Over the past year, I had the privilege of learning from long-term missionaries—people who have dedicated years of their lives to serving. Their insight and wisdom were invaluable. I learned how to fit patients for wheelchairs, do basic mechanical work, observed how to interact with people from different cultures, and so much more. Learning from people who’ve spent years in ministry gave me a perspective I couldn’t have gotten otherwise, and it’s made me even more eager to keep growing through future experiences.

Even though I was only there for ten months, it started to feel like a home. I found a church to attend regularly, built friendships, and discovered favorite places around town. One of my favorite parts of church in Thailand was gathering with friends and church members for a meal after the service—it created such a sweet sense of community. I also made friends through the work and at a local international school, and together we explored the city, went hiking, hung out at the mall, tried endless coffee shops, and had tons of movie nights. Over time, we found our go-to restaurants, swimming spots, hiking trails, and more. It wasn’t just about having fun—it was about building a community, and I truly loved it.

This is just a glimpse into what my time in Thailand was like, but I will always be thankful for those months. Saying goodbye was really hard, and I think that’s how I know this experience meant so much. I’m excited to see how God will continue to use what I learned and experienced as I take the next steps forward!
